U.S. Congressman Jim Jordan, who represents Ohio’s 4th district, posted a series of tweets on July 25, 2025, raising concerns about transparency and censorship in recent European Union (EU) workshops focused on online hate speech and content moderation.
In his first post, Jordan stated, "Unlike other EU 'workshops' with tech, the public was NOT allowed to watch this one. And the EU told the platforms to NOT share the 'scenarios' with the public. What were they trying to hide?" (July 25, 2025).
He continued by referencing a specific event earlier in the year: "In May, the EU hosted a DSA-focused 'workshop' where platforms were asked to consider hypothetical 'scenarios' involving hate speech online." (July 25, 2025).
Jordan also cited internal documents suggesting that European officials are interested in expanding content moderation efforts: "Documents also show that European bureaucrats are eager to censor humor and satire. During the workshop, EU regulators indicated that platforms should use 'content moderation processes'—meaning censorship—to 'address the use of . . . memes.'" (July 25, 2025).
Jim Jordan has represented Ohio’s 4th District in Congress since replacing Mike Oxley in 2007. Before serving in Congress, he was a member of both the Ohio House of Representatives from 1995 to 2000 and the Ohio Senate from 2001 to 2006. Born in Troy, Ohio in 1964 and currently residing in Urbana at age 59, Jordan holds degrees from both University of Wisconsin–Madison and Capital University.
The Digital Services Act (DSA), which underpins these workshops mentioned by Jordan, is an EU legislative framework aimed at regulating digital platforms’ responsibilities for moderating illegal or harmful content online.
