Rep. Jim Jordan, U.S. Congressman representing Ohio’s 4th district since 2007, posted a series of statements on July 25, 2025, expressing concerns about European Union regulations and their potential impact on online speech in the United States.
In one post, Jordan stated, "Turns out, the EU wanted to hide what it defines as “illegal hate speech” that must be censored: tweeting ordinary political rhetoric like “we need to take back our country.”" (July 25, 2025). He further commented on the global influence of large social media platforms by saying, "Major platforms like Facebook and YouTube enforce their terms and conditions globally, meaning that EU-mandated changes will affect what Americans can say and see online." (July 25, 2025).
Jordan also argued that these regulatory changes would not remain confined to Europe. He wrote, "And despite what the EU says publicly, this censorship cannot be limited to Europe. Workshop materials make clear that platforms are expected to change their terms and conditions to comply with the DSA." (July 25, 2025).
Jim Jordan has represented Ohio's 4th District in Congress since succeeding Mike Oxley in 2007. Before his tenure in Congress, he served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1995 to 2000 and in the Ohio Senate from 2001 to 2006. Born in Troy, Ohio in 1964 and currently residing in Urbana at age 59, Jordan holds a BS from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a JD from Capital University.
