Students at The Ohio State University at Lima can now earn a Bachelor of Science in Education leading to dual licensure in Primary General Education (PreK-5) and Intervention Specialist (PreK-5).
“The value of this program is immense. Ohio has a high need for preschool and elementary teachers with the skills to teach all types of students and to understand that all types of students will be in every classroom,” said Dr. Leah Herner-Patnode, coordinator of the education program at Ohio State Lima and an associate professor of special education. “The dual licensure program combines unique knowledge from both the educational studies department and the teaching and learning department so that our graduates are well-positioned to be competitive in the hiring market.”
The dual licensure program will launch for new students on the Lima and Columbus campuses spring semester 2023 and at Marion, Mansfield and Newark autumn semester 2023. Current students can transition into the program this semester.
Graduates of this program will be prepared to teach in preschool and elementary classrooms, providing instruction to children with and without disabilities. They will complete coursework toward two teaching licenses: primary education (P-5) and primary intervention specialist (P-5).
Significant field experiences are integrated throughout the program, providing opportunities for students to interact with professionals, children and families in a variety of settings while completing major course assignments.
The dual licensure program joins Ohio State Lima’s education lineup of primary education, middle childhood education, and child and youth studies.
