University of Northwestern Ohio issued the following announcement on April 11.

For the second year in a row, UNOH graduate Brandon Lam found himself in victory lane during the Rolex 24. The 24 Hours of Daytona is a daylong event that tests the limits of mechanical and human endurance. The race kicks of the season for the IMSA SportsCar Championship.

After graduation, Brandon landed a job with Monster Jam as a mechanic, but the pandemic put a halt to all events and caused him to take a different direction in his career.  Now, Brandon is a Hauler Driver for Riley Motorsports out of Mooresville, North Carolina.

Brandon studied Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, and Business Administration while at UNOH. He also took advantage of the CDL courses to supplement his diesel degree, which lead him to his current position with Riley Motorsports.

The duties as a Hauler Driver do not stop when the cars and equipment are safely transported. At the track Brandon is also responsible for fueling the cars on pit lane and working closely with hospitality to make sure everything is fully stocked and ready to use. “I also use my degree to make repairs in the shop when necessary,” Brandon states. “I took the fundamentals I learned in the CDL program and apply them to driving over the road for the team.”

The Rolex 24 event at Daytona International Speedway is like nothing else. “I think the race challenges you as a team and as an individual,” Brandon said. “For 24 hours, the crew has to be attentive of their group responsibilities while also battling fatigue and cold. Some of us on the team got to sit down between pit stops, just getting comfortable enough to doze off right before you get called back up to work.”

Brandon recalls fresh crock-pot chili and BBQ helping him get through the night. “During the race we came up on flat tires, tough calls for strategy, and damaged body panels, which add tremendous stress through the night. It was incredibly fulfilling to watch from the pit wall as our car crossed the checkered to take first in class.”

After starting yet another season off right, Brandon is hoping to help win another season championship with their prototype while also enjoying time with teammates at and away from the tracks. This is just the start of his career in the racing industry. Brandon says he would “love to be in a position where I can mentor others in their career and help them reach their full potential, as other have done to me.”
