State Representatives Angie King and Ty Mathews have introduced a resolution in Columbus urging Congress to pass the Defense against Drones Act of 2025. The legislation comes in response to multiple drone sightings near structures in King's district earlier this year.
The proposed resolution encourages Congress to pass H.R. 1907, which would permit homeowners to use a legally obtained shotgun to disable drones operating within 200 feet above their property.
"The growing use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has led to serious concerns over privacy, property rights, and public safety, particularly when drones operate at low altitudes over residential and agricultural areas," said King. She noted incidents where drones caused alarm among property owners, threatened livestock and crops, and raised cybersecurity concerns due to foreign-manufactured components.
Mathews expressed his support for the legislation, stating, "I am proud to stand by Rep. King to introduce key legislation to address an emerging issue and threat that affects all of our communities." He urged leaders in Washington D.C. and Congress to take immediate action.
Currently, federal and state laws prohibit property owners from disabling or destroying UAVs, with severe penalties for violations. King's resolution aims to signal Congress that the Ohio General Assembly supports federal legislation granting homeowners the right to privacy and security.
As of now, the resolution has not been assigned a House committee or given a number.
