COLUMBUS – The Ohio House Higher Education Committee recently made a significant decision by favorably passing legislation that would require public and private schools to designate restrooms for the exclusive use of biological males and biological females. The bill also mandates that all student restrooms, locker rooms, changing rooms, and shower rooms must be designated for the exclusive use of either biological females or biological males.
State Representative Angie King (R-Celina) emphasized the rationale behind the legislation, stating, "Science echoes what humanity has known since the beginning of time, that there are biological differences between females and males, and these biological differences create the need for separate private spaces." Representative King further explained that House Bill 183, also known as HB 183, aims to address the privacy and safety concerns of girls and women.
In addition to the restroom designations, the legislation will also prohibit schools from allowing biological males and biological females to share overnight accommodations. The decision made by the House Higher Education Committee marks a crucial step towards ensuring privacy and safety within educational institutions.
With the favorable passage of House Bill 183 in the committee, the legislation will now progress to the House floor for further consideration and a vote by all House members.
