State Rep. Angela King | The Ohio House of Representatives
The Ohio House has agreed to the Senate's changes to the Save Adolescents from Experimentation (SAFE) Act and the Save Women's Sports Act. State Representative Angie King (R-Celina) voted in favor of the changes, paving the way for the legislation to move forward.
Under the revised SAFE Act, children who are currently undergoing hormone therapy treatments will be allowed to continue their treatment if it is prescribed by an Ohio doctor. Previously, the act required consent from both parents for a child to begin mental health treatment, but now only one parent or guardian's consent is needed.
State Representative Angie King expressed her support for the legislation, stating, "Sometimes we have to look beyond the legislation and the impact it will have on Ohioans. We compromised to get the SAFE Act to the governor and put it into law because, at the end of the day, this legislation will still protect Ohio's children."
The SAFE Act aims to prevent medical professionals from performing experimental medicalized treatments on individuals under the age of 18. This includes surgeries, prescriptions of puberty-blocking drugs, and cross-sex hormones. The legislation seeks to safeguard the well-being of young Ohioans by ensuring that they are not subjected to potentially harmful procedures.
In addition to the SAFE Act, the Save Women's Sports Act was also passed through the House as part of the same vote. This act seeks to maintain fairness in female-only sports by prohibiting biological males from competing in these sports in Ohio.
The legislation will now be sent to the governor's office for his consideration. Once signed into law, the SAFE Act and the Save Women's Sports Act will provide important protections for Ohio's children and promote fairness in women's sports.
